31 July - 5 August 2004

Departure: Schiphol Airport Amsterdam: Saturday morning 31 July 2004
Return: Thursday evening 5 August 2004 (return flight to Amsterdam)
Organisers: Dr. Martin J. Wassen and dr. Tomasz Okruszko

Estimated costs: € 1200,-
Aims: to see hydrological and ecological processes operate in a near-natural European lowland river valley; to experience the beauty of landscape and nature.

The Biebrza is one of the last undisturbed lowland rivers in Europe. The wetlands of the Biebrza valley contain floodplains, fens and forests, which do not suffer from drainage, nutrient enrichment and pollution. Biodiversity is high and contains many species which are endangered elsewhere in Europe. Longitudinal and transversal hydrological and ecological gradients are well developed and can be observed in the field. For these reasons, the Biebrza Wetlands are used as a reference for restoration of deteriorated wetlands elsewhere in Europe.

Wassen and Okruszko are leading scientists in the ecology and hydrology of this area. They have good contacts with other scientists, nature managers and the local population. Their broad field experience guarantees that you will visit the best places and will be professionally introduced in eco-hydrological relations and all issues related to nature conservation and water management.
